Valentino Garavani and Joana Vasconcelos at MAAT

In Lisbon, more than 40 Valentino Garavani designs share the gallery with works by Joana Vasconcelos. The clothes and the installation ask to be seen together.

In the MAAT gallery, Joana Vasconcelos’s suspended installation stretches across a room of Valentino Garavani designs. Embroidery catches the light below it. Seen together, the works make scale part of the exhibition: a dress is shaped for the body; the sculpture occupies the space around it.

VENUS was first shown in Rome and has been adapted for Lisbon. MAAT presents more than 40 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces alongside Vasconcelos’s work. At the centre is Valkyrie Venus, the large textile sculpture she completed in 2025. Crochet, pots and cutlery also appear in her wider selection of works. The materials remain legible even as the forms grow monumental.

The clothes are not arranged as a self-contained sequence of house classics. Beside Vasconcelos’s installations, their colour, surface and construction come into sharper view. VENUS opened at MAAT on 2 October 2026 and runs until 22 February 2027.
